Easy to find words,in either language, and the phrases are very handy and useful.
The app is very useful but it has a few annoying features. Since I also use the Larousse English/French dictionary extensively I couldnt help but to compare the two dictionaries, especially since the Larousse app costs $5.99 and the Ascendo app costs $9.99. On the plus side: (1) English and Spanish words are interfiled in the Lookup module. (2) Tap the Audio icon and hear the word pronounced (if you are online). (3) Tap the Microphone icon and Record your voice. On the negative side: (1) Lookup, Phrases, and Conjugate modules are not interfiled. Too many key strokes are required to first translate a verb (Lookup), then conjugate it if its a verb (Conjugate), then hope that there might be an example of how to use it (Phrases) -- which there generally is not, then Lookup the Spanish word in English to determine the gender if its a noun. Phrases should be fully integrated with the relevant vocabulary. A Conjugate link should appear on each specific verb Lookup page near the verb itself rather than having to close the keyboard and tap the Conjugate icon in the bottom bar. Interfiling would have improved usability. The app is organized as if it were a print document. In the online world theres no reason to have separate phrasebooks, conjugation books, and dictionaries. (2) The gender of Spanish nouns should be indicated in the Spanish Lookup, not only the English Lookup. (3) The Microphone icon is located too close to both the search box and the Audio icon, which creates frustrating results if you tap the Microphone by mistake. If you tap the Microphone, a Recording message pops up. If you Cancel the message and tap the Audio icon, there is no sound and you can no longer hear pronunciations. It took me a while to figure out that you have to tap Done instead of Cancel. Then an arrow appears beside the Microphone and you must tap the arrow which changes into a square box and then back to an arrow and then the Audio icon works again. Its a mystery what is going on. Its also annoying. (4) Extremely little context is provided regarding usage of any word, making it difficult to choose the correct translation. For example, if you search the verb "to be" theres no explanation differentiating between "ser" and "estar." (5) Tap the Microphone and Record your voice. This feature is a negative for me, although others may perceive it as an advantage. It seems that the dictionary is intended to have a second purpose as a language training course. However, the dictionarys functionality should be improved before its uses are expanded.
The "Requirements" are in error. I have an iPod Touch running iOS 3.1.3 and neither the free version or the paid version will run on it. Ive rated it 1 star for that reason only.
This would be great for those wanting to learn to speak Spanish. However, what I was looking for was a way to communicate in a work situation with someone who had no English. I thought by upgrading to the paid version of this it would be useful in that way. Not so much. But its a good dictionary. I think its overpriced, though.
So many other options require an Internet connection in order to function, which is not really an option for many travelers. With all the data stored on my phone my only fear is dead battery. Have found a few words lacking but so does my 2 lb book that I left at home so all is good.
Ok, this is not a translation tool. It wont translate sentences or documents (and the ones of those Ive tried generally fail miserably). But as a dictionary, it has upgraded itself from the original version and now seems to have all verb tenses available, AND its a snap to hit "conjugate" while youre in the dictionary, and there you have the whole verb, all conjugated. I have noticed that it lacks the "imperative" tense, as in, "Listen"! The only other lack I notice (and I suspect this could be a tough one to arrange) is in the food and menu items that are NOT listed, at least as far as the many regions of Spain and Mexico Ive traveled. And I love how you can tap on any word from among those in the definition, and you are immediately now in the definition of THAT word. Easy to get back, as well. I have one translation app I use occasionally, and have used two other dictionaries; but this one is my default. I am very happy to have it and I use it daily. Thank you, whoever you are! Great job!
The conjugation tables are great, but the vocabulary included in the dictionary is very limited. Dont count on the app helping you with definitions for anything but the most common words.
I started to study Spanish presently.
Excellent and easy to use
An excellent resource for a beginner learning Spanish. I find the vocabulary section especially useful as the English and Spanish words are combined alphabetically.
While not cheap for those used to free or 0.99 apps, this really is the best dictionary and lookup app Ive found. The conjugations are super useful and I like that the app creators update not just the app, but even more so the word database regularly, cleaning it up, adding to it and improving it. Worth it.
Great Tool Much better than even a large paper dictionary in quality and speed, yet it goes in my pocket As an intermediate Spanish speaker I use it a lot
Very handy to have this dictionary on my iPhone and iPad. Its not as complete as I would wish, however.
I like this app for the verb conjugation sections, however it seems they are missing many words that I could find on the free Dictbox app. Also in portrait mode, the Translate button that I find very useful, which links the dictionary section with verb conjugations, gets cut off. Alas, I find this being my back up dictionary even though I paid more money for it.
To help learn Spanish and an invaluable pocket dictionary you always have with you on your iPhone
Could have more phrases , but excellent App.
This is a wonderful app. It is more than a dictionary, really. It gives lots of useful examples of all the listings, and there are thousands of verbs conjugated. If you are connected to wifi or cellular you can get the word or expression pronounced. It is really easy to flip through the screens, and it keeps a history of your recent searches so you can easily go back for another look. I have it on both my iPhone and my iPad, and use it a lot.
This is a great app. I especially like the fact that you can search both English and Spanish words from the same search bar without having to go back and forth between languages. I only wish that when I look for a Spanish word by first typing the English word and then click to conjugate the word that it would conjugate in Spanish. Instead I have to go back and type the Spanish word and then conjugate. I still highly recommend this app.
Great
